Throughout, there are extracts from the Thunderhead trying to make iterations of itself. On the Land of Nod, the people are making spaceships to be launched. It’s revealed that Goddard had played a role in gleaning the people of the space exploration projects.
Anastasia and Greyson work together to find Scythe Alighieri, using Jeri as a medium to talk to the Thunderhead. She and Jeri go to where Greyson is in the caves with this Tonist group. Goddard gleans everyone in the stadium who came to watch. Rowan’s public gleaning is organised but the Lone Star Scythes rescue him. The Scythes in Afric get Anastasia to dig into the Thunderhead and find incriminating information about Goddard and then make live broadcasts. Jeri and Anastasia travel to an Afric region and get along really well. Rowan is kidnapped and Goddard plans a grand, public execution for him. Goddard goes after Citra/Scythe Anastasia but she escapes with Jeri. He gets Morrison to pretend he gleaned Greyson and then hires him to go abroad and fix the messes Tonists have made (there are loads of rogue Tonist extremist groups). Greyson figures out Morrison is going to kill him from the Thunderhead’s subtle hints. Morrison disguises himself as a chef to get through. Scythe Rand keeps visiting the Thunderhead’s databases to get images of Tyger. Scythe Morrison, a Scythe who no one really cares for, is hired by Goddard to kill Greyson. Citra is treated well but Rowan is thrown into jail because he’s accused of sinking Endura. Scythe Possuelo hides them in his region. Jerico and their crew bring up the vault with the Scythe Diamonds (and Citra and Rowan as they find out). Jerico is a gender-fluid Madagascan (woman when the sky is clear, man when the sun is hidden). At the same time, Scythe Possuelo of the Amazonian Scythedom is onboard Jerico’s ship. Loriana is chosen by the Thunderhead to follow blueprints and give her approval. Nimbus agents procure Greyson (all orchestrated by the Thunderhead) and he gives them the coordinates of the Land of Nod. They live on the islands for a year or two. Scythe Faraday and Munira (the librarian from Alexandria) find the Land of Nod–the place the Thunderhead can’t see but another Scythe is needed to open the failsafe. The Tonists consider him to be a prophet of sorts. Greyson Tolliver is considered to be “The Toll” since he’s the only one who hasn’t been marked Unsavoury by the Thunderhead. The events in the book are a mix of what happened over the three years and then the present day–a bit confusing to explain. It’s been three years since Endura sank and Goddard is Overblade of Mid-Merica. Earth sucks and the Thunderhead has marked everyone but one person as Unsavoury.
